Globetrotters: Underrated Destinations

Europe has a lot to offer in terms of underrated travel spots. If you are looking for some diamonds buried in the sand, read on to discover a bunch of gems our resident travel writer has in store for you!

Colmar, France

Located 45 minutes from Strasbourg, this enchanting town produces the best gingerbread cookies and architectural heritage influenced by German and French styles.

Shere, England

Many blockbuster movies have been filmed here including the romantic comedy The Holiday. This small town in Surrey has two pubs, a museum, a candy shop, and some of the cutest cottage houses surrounded by greenery and River Tillingbourne.  

Montreux, Switzerland

Head to the French Canton Montreux, cruise Lake Geneva (Lac Leman) with the Swiss Alps in the background, feed the geese, then walk your way to Chateau de Chillon which houses terrifying stories of witches and prisoners once held captive & tortured there.

Pučiśća, Croatia

Located on the island of Brac, this spot is a hub for water sports enthusiasts, wind and kite surfing, hiking, and trekking.

Cappadocia, Turkey

Home to 36 underground cities, some of which are open for visits, there is also an open-air museum where rock formations stand tall. This hiker’s heaven also offers hot air balloon rides. There is also the unique opportunity of staying at cave hotels!

Český Krumlov, Czech

While everybody goes to youthful Prague and Karlovy Vary for spa treatments and thermal baths, try underrated Český Krumlov, a miniature version of Prague. Barely touched by mass tourism, this old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site totally worth checking out.

Granada, Spain

Highly influenced by Arabic & Western art, Granada is one of the happiest places on earth, and also hosts the Cruces de Mayo celebrations in May where locals dress in Flamenco outfits. Live flamenco shows are held for free in every corner of the city.

Mostar, Bosnia & Herzegovina

If not for Bosnia & Herzegovina’s history and nature, then head here for its fairy-tale city of Mostar, known for its Turkish houses and old bridge leading up to Koski Mehmed-Pasha Mosque’s minaret for stunning views of the city.

Giethoorn, Netherlands

Navigate this road-less tiny Dutch town by boat, and check out Volendam fishing village with its colorful wooden houses and museum full of paintings, sculptures, and pottery works dating back to the 19th century.

Marsaxlokk, Malta

The Mediterranean island is a summer destination on the rise. Marsaxlokk is Malta’s main fishing village wwhich serves the freshest seafood with panoramic city views.
